Rachel sat back in her chair, full and relieved to have gotten through dinner without anything awkward happening. Her family were all extremely nice. There was no snobby aunt or uncle who drank too much. She just didnât want anyone to quiz Kerri.
She turned to see that all the other tables were in the process of being cleared, waiters and waitresses coming and going. Their group was clearly preventing them from closing up.
Rachel shouldnât have been so worried, but she hadnât seen some of them in years, and she couldnât remember if all of them knew she was gay, because the last time they were all together, sheâd had to remind her fatherâs brother that she wasnât going to be marrying a guy, and that he should forget about setting her up with some rodeo cowboy.
But conversation had flowed all evening. Kerri was on her right, and Travis on her left. Stacey was sitting across from him, and Rachel looked in her direction when she heard Stacey mention her name.
Stacey had been talking to Rachelâs Aunt Marie, her motherâs sister.
Marie shook her head, waving Stacey off. âI donât want to be a nuisance.â
âWhatâs wrong?â Rachel asked as the rest of their group had started pushing back their chairs and reaching for their jackets.
Marie and Stacey came around to Rachelâs side of the table.
âI gave Jack one job,â Marie said with an eye roll. âBook us into the hotel. And he did reserve a room for us, but itâs only for tomorrow night. We canât really drive back, because we both had a few glasses of wine, and he failed to mention that little detail until about twenty minutes ago so⦠I went outside and called the hotel, but theyâre fully booked tonight.â
Stacey slid her arms into her jacket. âI said they should stay with us. If you didnât mind, Rachel.â
âYeah, no. Of course,â Rachel said as she put on her jacket. âYou can have my room. Iâll take the couch.â She couldnât have her aunt and uncle driving anywhere tonight.
âNo,â Marie said, her hand on Rachelâs arm. âIâm not kicking you out of your own room. Weâll see if thereâs somewhere else in town to stay.â
âReally, itâs fine,â Rachel said. âItâs only for one night.â
âWhy donât you stay at Kerriâs?â Stacey suggested, and Rachel could feel her eyes dart to her right, where Kerri was.
Rachel cleared her throat. âIâm fine on the couch.â
Kerri appeared at her side. âDid I hear my name?â
Stacey spoke before Rachel could. âMarie and Jack donât have anywhere to stay tonight, and theyâre going to take Rachelâs room. Instead of Rachel making up a bed on the couch, I thought it would make more sense if she stayed with you.â
Rachel closed her eyes for a second, wishing the ground would swallow her up. Her cheeks were hot, and she was afraid to look at Kerri.
What would she think of her family now?
The only reason this was happening was because she never corrected Staceyâs assumption that Kerri was Rachelâs girlfriend.
