Rachel sat back in her chair, full and relieved to have gotten through dinner without anything awkward happening. Her family were all extremely nice. There was no snobby aunt or uncle who drank too much. She just didn’t want anyone to quiz Kerri.

She turned to see that all the other tables were in the process of being cleared, waiters and waitresses coming and going. Their group was clearly preventing them from closing up.

Rachel shouldn’t have been so worried, but she hadn’t seen some of them in years, and she couldn’t remember if all of them knew she was gay, because the last time they were all together, she’d had to remind her father’s brother that she wasn’t going to be marrying a guy, and that he should forget about setting her up with some rodeo cowboy.

But conversation had flowed all evening. Kerri was on her right, and Travis on her left. Stacey was sitting across from him, and Rachel looked in her direction when she heard Stacey mention her name.

Stacey had been talking to Rachel’s Aunt Marie, her mother’s sister.

Marie shook her head, waving Stacey off. “I don’t want to be a nuisance.”

“What’s wrong?” Rachel asked as the rest of their group had started pushing back their chairs and reaching for their jackets.

Marie and Stacey came around to Rachel’s side of the table.

“I gave Jack one job,” Marie said with an eye roll. “Book us into the hotel. And he did reserve a room for us, but it’s only for tomorrow night. We can’t really drive back, because we both had a few glasses of wine, and he failed to mention that little detail until about twenty minutes ago so… I went outside and called the hotel, but they’re fully booked tonight.”

Stacey slid her arms into her jacket. “I said they should stay with us. If you didn’t mind, Rachel.”

“Yeah, no. Of course,” Rachel said as she put on her jacket. “You can have my room. I’ll take the couch.” She couldn’t have her aunt and uncle driving anywhere tonight.

“No,” Marie said, her hand on Rachel’s arm. “I’m not kicking you out of your own room. We’ll see if there’s somewhere else in town to stay.”

“Really, it’s fine,” Rachel said. “It’s only for one night.”

“Why don’t you stay at Kerri’s?” Stacey suggested, and Rachel could feel her eyes dart to her right, where Kerri was.

Rachel cleared her throat. “I’m fine on the couch.”

Kerri appeared at her side. “Did I hear my name?”

Stacey spoke before Rachel could. “Marie and Jack don’t have anywhere to stay tonight, and they’re going to take Rachel’s room. Instead of Rachel making up a bed on the couch, I thought it would make more sense if she stayed with you.”

Rachel closed her eyes for a second, wishing the ground would swallow her up. Her cheeks were hot, and she was afraid to look at Kerri.

What would she think of her family now?

The only reason this was happening was because she never corrected Stacey’s assumption that Kerri was Rachel’s girlfriend.
